Barnsley’s Proud History
Barnsley boasts over 900 years of documented history, beginning with its entry in the Domesday Book of 1086. By issue of a royal charter, King Henry III decreed Barnsley a market town in 1249. As one of the UK’s oldest markets, Barnsley market celebrated its 775th anniversary in 2024.
Barnsley is well known for its coal and glassmaking industries. Visitors to Dearne Valley Country Park and Barnsley Main Nature Reserve will find hints to Barnsley’s mining infrastructure remain prominent throughout. Tributes to Barnsley’s glassmaking industry can be found in The Glass Works shopping arcade and Experience Barnsley Museum collections.
On Barnsley’s outskirts, stately homes and luscious green spaces offer long walks and opportunities to spot local wildlife in historic locations. Monk Bretton Priory immerses visitors in Barnsley’s medieval origins, setting Yorkshire’s theological development against a wider landscape of local politics.
Wentworth Castle Gardens and Stainborough Castle offer grand displays of historic power. Originally Stainborough Hall Estate, it was bought by Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford, after his cousin, Thomas Watson, inherited Wentworth Woodhouse. Infuriated by this familial slight, the Earl expanded Stainborough Hall to dramatically outshine his cousin’s estate. The mock medieval castle was later added for Earl Wentworth’s children to play in.
Worsbrough Mill Country Park’s 60-acre reservoir offer opportunity to explore, catch carp, or spot waterfowl. Worsbrough Mill has operated since 1625; Visitors can learn about the milling process, purchase flour from The Mill Shop, or relax in The Millers Tea Room.
Local Food Culture
Barnsley has undergone a recent renaissance, with older buildings making way for a new indoor market, cinema, restaurants and bars. But beneath its stylish modern appearance lays a foundation of famously hearty local food and beverages.
The Barnsley Chop is a double lamb loin chop, originating in 1849 at either the King’s Head or Brooklands Hotel. Served to farmers on market day, it’s likely this large cut of meat was washed down with Barnsley Bitter. Originally brewed by Barnsley Brewery Company (1850s-1970s), Barnsley Bitter was saved from extinction in 2003 by Acorn Brewery, Wombwell.
