Discover Normanton.
Known for its industrial past, Normanton is built on the back of its coal mining and railway industries. Today, Normanton is a great little commuter town known for its affordability and exciting, family-friendly activities.
Normanton’s Historical Sites
To truly immerse yourself in Normanton’s history, it is recommended that visitors follow the Normanton Heritage Trail. It follows a circular route that passes by several listed structures, longstanding pubs, buildings reclaimed by nature, and even traverses part of the Trans Pennine Trail.
One of the Normanton Heritage Trail’s key locations is St John’s Colliery, where visitors get a glimpse of Normanton’s coal mining history. Since operations ceased in 1986, St John’s Colliery has become a popular spot for dog walks. Remnants of the colliery’s infrastructure can still be found, poised against West Yorkshire’s rolling hills.
Sports & Leisure in Normanton
Normanton’s sporting landscape is dominated by Rugby League, with Normanton Knights ARLFC being the town’s main team. The team can trace their roots back to 1879, when Normanton’s first rugby club hailed from The Midland Hotel. They experienced several rocky seasons both in play and financially before folding in 1906. A new club called Hopetown F.C. was founded, eventually becoming the present-day Normanton Knights. Today, Normanton Knights’ home games are played at their dedicated grounds on Queen Elizabeth Drive, affectionately known as “The Graveyard”.
Normanton is also home to two cricket clubs – Normanton St John’s CC and Normanton Men in Blue – and two football teams – A.S. Normanton F.C. and Normanton Athletic Juniors. These teams provide ample opportunity to keep fit and build a sense of community locally.
Days Out in Normanton
Haw Hill Park offers a wide variety of activities and events suitable for all the family. The park has several bowling greens, tennis courts and play areas to help keep you fit and allow the kids to blow off steam. The park is also famous for hosting the annual summertime Party @ Haw Hill Park. Every July, the Party @ Haw Hill Park event features a range of tribute acts and unsigned local acts. With free entry and a variety of food and drink on offer, the Party @ Haw Hill Park is a big hit with the locals!
Normanton Gala Weekend at Haw Hill Park is also a popular annual event happening in September. There will be an array of delightful stalls, attractions, and thrilling fairground rides for all the family to enjoy! The event promises a variety of entertainment including dance troops, fireworks, car boot sale, and an energetic parade through Normanton.
Hatfield Hall is a popular events space for weddings, conferences and public holidays. The Hall boasts scenic views across 145 acres of glorious Yorkshire countryside, punctuated by streams and lakes. Locals frequent Hatfield Hall’s extensive grounds for leisurely strolls or a spot of golf at Normanton Golf Club. The club offers 18 holes for club members or 9 holes for non-members. Normanton Golf Club also plays an active role in promoting women in sports through its R&A’s ‘Women in Golf’ initiative. Newcomers are also welcome to practice their skills at the club’s indoor golf simulator or with their dedicated coaches.
