Pontefract’s Deep Roots

For Pontefract’s sweeter side, visitors can indulge in soft, chewy Pontefract Cakes. Hardly a cake at all, these liquorice discs are the hallmark of this historic town. Liquorice was brought to Britain by Crusaders or Cluniac monks returning from the Mediterranean between the 11th and 16th centuries. Originating around 1612, Pontefract Cakes are often stamped with an image of Pontefract Castle.
Continuing Pontefract’s sweet tradition is the HARIBO factory, offering patrons their version of Pontefract Cakes alongside other popular confectionary.
Related are the ruins of Pontefract Priory, likely where Cluniac monks lived after converting the Mediterranean— bags of liquorice in hand! Founded in 1090, Pontefract Priory is now a large greenery for picnics on the grassy slopes created by its buried foundations.
Pontefract also offers two museums with activities and exhibits suitable for all ages. Parents benefit from a wide range of affordable events across science, history, and the arts to expand the child’s mind, with sessions catering to special educational needs and disabilities.
